Lake Tahoe is slated to receive $415 million on top of 1.4 Billion already received.   If you have visited Lake Tahoe, as I have for many years, you may still think that the Lake is the same as its’ always been.  The truth is that the lake is deteriorating in clarity and being attacked by the invasion of foreign mussels, sediment, rising water temperatures and erosion.  In 1968, you could see 102 feet into the lake.  That fell to 64 feet in 1997 and has since increased to 70 feet.  Asian clams have found a home in the Lake and are increasing in numbers as well as Quagga and Zebra Mussels.

Funds to support the health of the Lake have been contributed by California, $615 million, local municipalities, $59 million, Nevada $87 million and the private sector $250 million.   There are many uncertainties remaining as to the ways to control the damaging organisms, erosion and other challenges.   At least the need to keep Lake Tahoe pure is a national, as well as a local, priority.
