TRUCKEE WATER – THE SWEETEST IN THE WORLD

The most exhilarating back packing trips I’ve ever taken are in the spring of the year.  There are still snow banks around.  The first color of wild flowers are just showing themselves from their long winters sleep and   many colored birds are just beginning to reappear from their winter haunts.

But, the most enjoyment for me, coming after a long days hike, is to go to the bottom of a big snow bank, where the snow melts into a little stream, put my tin cup into the ice cold water and take the most refreshing drink I’ve ever experienced.  It’s so cold your tongue almost sticks to the cup, the tin seems to react to the water and tingles while the flavor is sharp and indescribable.

Mountain snow banks are not always accessible so number 2 is to visit your kitchen sink, place a large glass of ice under the tap and fill.  That water has made its way from the mountains surrounding Truckee, seeping through tons of decomposed granite laid down thousands of years ago in the glacier age and finally finds its way into the Martis Valley Aquifer.  There it rests, waiting until it is drawn up into your home.

The water seems to have collected all of the natural minerals and salts  that so many water companies try to emulate.  I’m not sure if our fresh mountain water brings out that sparkle in our citizens eyes, or, whether it makes our people love to swim, ski, fish and hike or, whether our children are smarter, but, maybe, just maybe our water has something to do with it.
