INDEPENDENCE LAKE PRESERVED
Independence Lake, a little known and, almost hidden, lake has been purchased by the Nature Conservancy. History recalls that Disney wanted to purchase the almost 2,500 acre forest and lake, 30 or more years ago, in order to build a gated high-end residential development and ski area. The property has been looked at for many years by developers, but finally the property will rest in the hands of the Nature Conservancy which will allow public access and develop the rustic facilities for public use. The only significant change will be that no motors will be allowed on the lake. The main reason is to keep invasive aquatic species from establishing themselves in the lake. The most invasive are the quagga and zebera mussles.
For fishermen and fisherwomen, some of the largest brown trout, lake trout and cutthroat trout in California can be found hiding in the crystal clear depths of this pristine lake.
