Invasive weed removed from Lake Tahoe
The Eurasian watermilfoil weed, a fast spreading invasive aquatic weed first was found in Emerald Bay about 10 years ago and has steadily gained a foot hold. As far as it’s known, Emerald Bay is the only place where the weed has been found.

TRPA, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, UC Davis, California Department of Parks and Rec. and ACE Diving Company jointly undertook the eradication plan by putting down on the lake bottom 8500 sq. ft. of 8’ by 40’ reusable bottom barrier strips in June. The removal of same resulted in the bottom being clean sand with no weeds.
The method used was experimental but, with the success of this first try, it will be used to clear Lake Tahoe of these invasive pests.
