JUST BEFORE WINTER - October 16, 2009
It’s always the same just before winter. It starts to get cold and you need a coat to go outside. The flowers are gone and the leaves have begun to display their oranges, reds and yellows. Groves of aspen are silent until now when they begin to display their incredibly boisterous colors.

Birds, usually flitting in droves, have vanished, no doubt moving their families south before the snow. According to legend, when squirrels are most active and aggressively putting away seeds and chewing up mounds of pine cones, a heavy winter is coming. If legend holds true, we’d better set in a store of wood, food and brandy for the next 5 months.
Now is the time to wax and sharpen the skis. Make sure there is plenty of wood and trade in the Corona for a hot brandy brandishing a swizzle stick of cinnamon. Yeeeeeah.
