There has been no substantive snowfall since the last part of December in the mountains surrounding Truckee.  The reports from weather experts places the current snow pack between 46% to 60% of normal for this time of the year.  Mount Rose now has 3 ½ feet of snow which was 67% of normal in January and now is 53% of normal.  The probable snow for the rest of the year looks bleak.

Normal snowfall in the Sierras usually peaks in December through February.  This means that the heaviest predictable snowfalls only have about 3 weeks to go.  On the other side of the coin is the fact that the mountains have received a solid month of snow in March, which in past years has brought us out of a drought year.  The next snow is predicted for February 5th through the 7th, although, it is forecasted to be light and the weather warm.  What we is need is a good old fashioned blizzard for about 4 or 5 days.

We’ve come a long way from Truckee being the ice capital of California with several entrepreneurs being made millionaires in the ice business on Boca and Donner Lakes.  Yes, the tinkle of Truckee ice stemmed the thirsts of the of many newly San Francisco rich.  Some of the ice even made its way back to New York via insulated box cars.
