Tahoe Forest Health System’ partnership with U C Davis makes it the best hospital in inland California.  U C Davis designated Tahoe Forest Health System a rural center of excellence. Medical students from U C Davis will now complete their training  at Tahoe Forest rather than urban hospitals.

The results, according to officials, is more involvement with procedures and real world challenges for doctors who don’t have a legion of specialists at their disposal.  The Tahoe Forest Cancer Center is an economic engine for Truckee, generating $4 million a year that wouldn’t otherwise be here, said Tom Hobday who acts as the liaison between the 2 hospitals.  The Cancer center is treating 62 percent of patients in the area.  This is far beyond initial expectations.

Being connected to UC Davis allows the district to have cutting edge treatment without all of the costs supporting it, since U C Davis has a $1 billion  dollar a year budget.

Historically, medical students shied away from going to rural hospitals for their training but, now, students are anxious to come to Truckee.  It gives the hospital a great future advantage to attract bright new young doctors to this area.
