The Kids just  love it!

Started 20 years ago by Bob Tilton, the Truckee Fishing Derby has reached its’ 20th anniversary.  Bob decided that kids need an outlet that gives young active bodies an outlet for their natural energy.  What better venue than fishing?

Soon after its’ beginning, the Truckee noon Rotary assisted Bob in the presentation of the program to the community.  Some of the trophy fish are purchased  from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife while others are donated by them from fines levied by the fish and game. Truckee’s noon Rotary also donates a portion of the fish costs.   Jim Dill, also a Rotarian, has headed this event for a number of years while Ray Butler of the Nevada Fish and Wildlife Commission has also provided assistance to the program since its’ inception.  Mountain Hardware has also been of great help in supporting the program. Rotarians also assist the youngsters at the pond with tangles, knots, broken lines, bait, hurt feelings from lost fish  and  hooks in fingers. For those people who have enjoyed a hard day of fishing and need a little sustenance, Rotary opens a booth for hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks.

Fishing and the outdoors experience has always been a great part of our family of 5 sons.  At our family get togethers, there is always some special time mentioned of our backpacking and fishing experiences. These last a lifetime and become part of the family lore. If your youngsters haven’t been introduced to fishing, this is a great opportunity and you are enthusiastically invited.

The location of the derby is newly named Michaels Pond, close to Donner Lake on the road past the Holiday Inn Express at the first Truckee exit from Donner summit.  Fishing tackle is not supplied however, tackle can be available for special circumstances with prior knowledge.

While the fishing derby is over for this year, there will definitely be one next year.  Should you wish to be notified of this event, I would be happy to supply you with that information.  The exact date has not as yet been set but, I will keep you apprised at the time when it is published.
